This page lists news items important for developers interested in the iLiad platform.
It is now possible to directly request the developer package from MyiRex.
To request the package go here. Login with your MyiRex account and select the MAC Address of your iLiad. Afterwards connected to iDS to download this package.
If you do not see your MAC address in the list, connect to iDS using your MyiRex account and try again afterwards.
Today we have made the final steps in our GPL release procedure.
We have published sources of kernel 2.4.19, patch files for the changes iRex applied, filesystem packages, toolchains and build environment for various versions we shipped until today.
These sources are available via the Developer Downloads section here .
All devices leaving factory have software version 2.9.5 which is GPL compliant and exactly the source as listed above as of per today.
All devices out there in the field will get software release 2.9 shortly, which is not yet fully GPL compliant. The install base will be updated within a few weeks to version 2.9.5 making them GPL compliant as well.
Herewith we are fully compliant with the GNU Public Licence.
The reason for our delay to comply with the GPL was caused by supplier who’s sources we were not allowed to publish under GPL.
This has been solved now and we will maintain GPL compliance in the future.
We greatly value the contributions of the open source community. In the comings months we will continue our effort to provide the open source community the necessary platform and tools to develop for iLiad. On short notice we will release additional information about the topic.
In addition to offering our sources online for download you can also order a CD with our source codes. You can place an order for this via our contact form .
The iRex Team
We have updated the download area with the sources for iPDF version 2.8 and a new SDK package for cross-compilation. The public SVN repository has also been updated, so you can easily view the (massive) changes.
The developer community on mobileread has recently created several applications and scripts to use with the iLiad. To allow the community to install and test these user applications we have decided to offer a software package which can be downloaded via iDS on your iLiad and it will allow you to execute shell scripts from the content lister on your iLiad.
The package will run with the latest software version 2.7.1.
iRex Technologies can not take any responsibility for any damage caused to your device, software or data and the use of this package and the installation of your own applications are at your own risk.
You can request this software package here.

Thanks to the many reactions on the Beta Test Program we will temporary close the signups. All those who signed up will be entered into a pool from which we will form an initial Beta Test group and an official invitation will follow shortly.
We are looking for volunteers for our Beta Test Program. This program aims to involve community members in testing next software releases prior to their commercial release. Purpose is to find problems as early as possible and improve quality of released products rather than pointing missing features. The challenge for the beta tester is to find bugs and report these via a bug tracker to the development team. Especially 'rare' use often exposes weird problems - It's a challenge to find these problems above the obvious ones. We expect a beta tester to report problems with a clear to-the-point description and if reproducible, including the procedure to reproduce it.
To sign up for the Beta Test Program you need to be the owner of an iLiad, preferable have a technical background or technical knowledge related to the iLiad and have a positive attitude toward iRex and the iLiad and the will to contribute to improve the iLiad together with us.
The release of the iDS protocol will allow developers to interface with the iDS using their own programs.
This will create possibilities for additional features like:
The iDS protocol will be released together with the formal launch of the SDK, which is expected for October/November.
Development is in progress to install iLiad software updates using a CF-card. Software updates can be downloaded from the iRex website and placed on a CF-card. When the CF-card is placed in the iLiad a restart of the device will install the new software update. Target release date is November/December.
